Hello, my name is Kat. Kat Slater to be precise- proudly carrying on the legacy of that classy East Enders character, who by the way I saw in Pizza Express the other day.
I’m not much like my East Enders namesake- we have both worked in pubs before but I think that’s about all we have in common.
My journey to Essential can be summarised as follows:
- A summer living in a caravan and working in a hotel in Cornwall to make money for…
- Half a year in South Africa teaching kids, wrestling with lions and learning to be a game ranger followed by…
- A Philosophy degree at Bristol University to contemplate what I had just done and then…
- A brief spell in the marketing department of a silicone baking molds company in Italy (?!) which drove me to…
- A pub in Putney where I met Alex, Luca and Stuart for an interview and got the job as Essential’s very first office assistant back in early 2007
Through the printer battles and stationary cupboard wars I dabbled in a few research projects and started to see that qualitative research was where I wanted to be. So I started Essential’s graduate training scheme which took me all the way to where I am today- Senior Research Executive- as of 3 weeks ago in fact. What a journey, and what a great company to do it with.
I’m a big believer in striving for a good work-fun balance. You work much better, stay creative, are nicer to be around and are generally a lot happier if you make time for fun. And conversely you have much more fun if you work hard and love what you do. Fun for me is a muddled mix of countryside exploits, listening to good music and being on boats. I’ve been told this blog will be fun as well, so here is my first attempt!
